Last week I said Wednesday through Friday looked like the first real window we’d had, and that it would be a short one. Hope you got what you needed out of it.
What I saw around here: the guys who waited a day longer than they wanted to are the ones who aren’t looking at ruts this morning. The ones who went the first afternoon it looked fit found out what I meant about six inches down.
Either way, we’re into it now. The thing about a fall like this one is the windows don’t get longer from here — they get shorter, colder and further apart. Whatever you’ve got left to do, the machine that finishes it in one pass is worth more than it was in August.
Which brings me to the one below. If you were at Demo Day you already know what I think of it.

Machine of the Week: MASCHIO GASPARDO ADMIRAL 850
Trailed disc harrow — one pass, and you’re done

MASCHIO GASPARDO’s own words for why they built it: “the need to accommodate ever-narrower working windows.” They designed it for cold, heavy ground and for damp soil carrying a lot of residue — rocks and stones included. Read that back and tell me it doesn’t describe this fall.
Sixty-eight discs, twenty-four inch, in four gangs — two front pairs and two rear, with a metre of gap between them so soil and residue flow through instead of plugging. Every disc independent on a vibrating spring. Tires sit center-frame so depth holds where you set it. Behind that, three gangs of spring tines and a rear roller that leaves it level and ready to seed.
Last week we talked about the quick shallow pass. This is the other end of the range — what you reach for when the residue is heavy and you get one shot at it. It wants 400 horse in front of it. If you’ve got that, come look.
